Thompsons Point, Portland, Maine
This unique peninsula that juts out into the Fore River and is one of the first landmarks you see as you enter Portland along interstate 295 is soon to be transformed. An industrial site for many years, it is a prime waterfront piece of real estate in Portland. The Portland Jetport sits across the Fore River to the Southwest, to the North on the Peninsula is the Portland Transportation Center which is home to the Amtrak Downeaster and Concord Bus Lines. Along the perimeter of the peninsula with a connection to the West is the Fore River Trail that is part of the Portland Trails network. The project that will transform this site is known as The Forefront at Thompson Point, a one hundred million dollar mixed use development that is still evolving. A potential sports center for the Maine Red Claws Basketball Team, office building's, a sports medicine facility, music hall, restaurants, parking and even a small boat launch site are all potential components that are still being worked out. There is huge potential to transform this currently barren industrial land into a true modern gateway development that will welcome visitors to Portland from the air, land and water. This morning I spent an hour walking the site and documenting the land as it looks currnetly. As access allows I hope to document the changes as this project evolves. This is certainly one of the most exciting projects that Portland will see this decade.
