Thompsons Point, Portland, Maine

This unique peninsula that juts out into the Fore River and is one of the first landmarks you see as you enter Portland along interstate 295 is soon to be transformed.  An industrial site for many years, it is a prime waterfront piece of real estate in Portland.  The Portland Jetport sits across the Fore River to the Southwest, to the North on the Peninsula is the Portland Transportation Center which is home to the Amtrak Downeaster and Concord Bus Lines.  Along the perimeter of the peninsula with a connection to the West is the Fore River Trail that is part of the Portland Trails network.  The project that will transform this site is known as The Forefront at Thompson Point, a one hundred million dollar mixed use development that is still evolving.  A potential sports center for the Maine Red Claws Basketball Team, office building's, a sports medicine facility, music hall, restaurants, parking and even a small boat launch site are all potential components that are still being worked out.  There is huge potential to transform this currently barren industrial land into a true modern gateway development that will welcome visitors to Portland from the air, land and water. This morning I spent an hour walking the site and documenting the land as it looks currnetly.  As access allows I hope to document the changes as this project evolves.  This is certainly one of the most exciting projects that Portland will see this decade.

Dr. Neal Barnard at the University of New England

As the official photographer for the Center for Global Humanities at UNE I am very fortunate to be on hand to document the yearly lecture series produced by the Center.  Some of the speakers in the past have included Noam Chomsky, Bill Mckibben and many other scholars and experts in their fields.  Recently Dr. Neal Barnard who is a clinical researcher, author and one America's leading advocates for health and nutrition was in Maine to do a lecture and a special reception at author Meg Wolff's residence.  Neal's message was pretty loud and clear about ways we can all eat healthier and gain benefits from doing so.  I think of myself as pretty food smart but there is always someting to learn and thanks to Neal I often question some of my choices.  If you do know about Neal his web site is worth a look here.

Neal is pictured with the Director for the Center for Global Humanities, Anouar Majid.  Anouar is holding a copy of the Portland Press Herald where an a full page ad was placed promoting Neal's Lecture.

207Lacrosse Halloween Havoc

Sunday I had a blast coving a Lacrosse event hosted by 207Lacrosse called Halloween Havoc.  A full gallery of my images from the event can be seen here.  Great costumes, awesome players, perfect weather and a great venue made for a terrific evening of lacrosse play at Deering Fields in Portland, Maine.
